Swiss Health Insurance Premiums 2027: Rise by Canton

From ~+CHF 13 to ~+CHF 38 a month for an adult depending on the cantonal capital: the 2027 LAMal premium rise canton by canton, and what it costs a family.

·5 min read

The Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) published the 2027 health insurance premiums at the end of September. The announced Swiss average: +5.0%. But a national average says little about your own bill: depending on the canton, the median adult premium rises, in our calculation, by ~CHF 13 to ~CHF 38 a month.

For a family of four, the difference runs into hundreds of francs a year. And the window to act is short: to switch insurer on 1 January, your cancellation must reach your current insurer by 30 November at the latest.

Three things stand out.

The rise does not follow the premium level. Zurich has the steepest rise of the 26 capitals in our calculation, even though its 2026 premium was not among the highest. Conversely, Geneva, which keeps the highest premium in this table, is among the smallest rises in percentage terms.

Cheap cantons rise too. Zug remains the cheapest capital in the table, yet its premium still goes up by about 4%.

Our median is not the FOPH average. The official +5.0% averages all deductibles and all insurance models. Our figures cover a single case — an adult with a CHF 2'500 deductible on the standard model — and only the capital's premium region: a canton with several regions can see different rises elsewhere. For your own municipality, its OikoSearch page shows the change for its region.

For a family, the rise runs into hundreds of francs a year: the median across the 26 capitals is around ~CHF 590, and it exceeds ~CHF 1'000 in Zurich. That is the sum to weigh when you compare the insurers in your region.

What to do before 30 November

  • Compare the insurers in your region on priminfo, the FOPH's official comparator. It gives each insurer's exact premium for your age, deductible and model.
  • Cancel in time: the letter must be received by your current insurer by 30 November — the postmark does not count. The FOPH recommends sending it by mid-November, by registered mail. Register with the new insurer at the same time.
  • Look at alternative models (family doctor, telemedicine, care network): they are generally cheaper than the standard model used in our tables.

For how a premium is built — deductible, co-payment, premium regions — see our guide to Swiss health insurance.

Methodology

  • Profile: adult (26 and over), CHF 2'500 deductible, standard model with free choice of doctor, accident cover included; for the family table, two adults and two children (actual FOPH child premiums for the same region).
  • Value used: median of the premiums of all insurers active in the capital's premium region, for 2026 and 2027, with the same method both years.
  • Excluded: individual premium reductions (cantonal subsidies), supplementary insurance, alternative models, other deductibles.
  • Nature of the figure: official median premium, not your insurer's premium. Your actual rise depends on your insurer, model and deductible.
  • Caveat: values can vary noticeably by municipality (premium region), insurer, chosen deductible and age.
